Description

Monosyn® is a high-performance surgical suture developed by B. Braun, designed to meet the diverse needs of medical professionals across various fields. This sterile, synthetic, absorbable monofilament suture is crafted for soft tissue approximation and ligation, making it an ideal choice for procedures in general surgery, gynecology, urology, gastrointestinal surgery, oral surgery, skin closure, and veterinary applications.

Composition and Structure

Monosyn® is composed of a copolymer blend of glycolide, ε-caprolactone, and trimethylene carbonate, also known as glyconate. This unique composition ensures reliable performance and predictable absorption characteristics. The suture is available in both violet and undyed options, providing visibility choices to suit different surgical environments.

Performance and Absorption

The suture's absorption occurs through hydrolysis, with tensile strength retention of approximately 70% at 7 days, 50% at 13–14 days, and 20% at 21 days. Complete absorption is achieved within 60 to 90 days, aligning with the healing timelines of many soft tissues.

Key Features

  • Tensile Strength and Knot Security: Monosyn® offers high knot-pull tensile strength and excellent knot security, ensuring reliable wound closure.
  • Smooth Tissue Passage: The monofilament structure provides smooth passage through tissues, minimizing drag and reducing the risk of infection compared to braided sutures.
  • Flexibility and Handling: Exceptional flexibility and ease of handling make it a preferred choice for surgeons.
  • Needle-Thread Combinations: Available in a wide range of needle-thread combinations, suture sizes, and lengths to accommodate specific surgical needs.

Indications

Monosyn® is suitable for a broad range of applications, including subcutaneous and intracutaneous sutures, mesh fixation, gastrointestinal anastomosis, and closure of tissues in gynecology, obstetrics, and urology. It is not recommended for use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, or neurological tissues.

Packaging and Sterilization

The sutures are available in various packaging options, including pre-cut lengths and ligature reels, with units packaged in boxes of 6, 12, 24, or 36. Sterilization is performed using ethylene oxide, ensuring compliance with stringent regulatory standards.

Special Variants

Monosyn® Quick is a short-term absorbable variant designed for fast-healing tissues, offering rapid tensile strength loss and complete absorption in approximately 56 days. It is particularly useful for dermal sutures, episiotomy, and circumcision.

Handling and Storage

Supplied sterile, Monosyn® should be stored at room temperature and not resterilized. Adverse reactions are minimal but may include localized irritation or inflammatory responses at the wound site.

Monosyn® stands out as a versatile and reliable suture solution, supporting surgical excellence across a wide array of medical disciplines.
