Description
Maxon™ Suture, crafted by Covidien, a Medtronic company, is a high-performance synthetic absorbable suture designed to meet the demanding needs of medical professionals. Composed of polyglyconate, this monofilament suture offers exceptional strength retention and minimal tissue reactivity, making it ideal for long-term wound support.
Material and Structure
- Material: Polyglyconate
- Structure: Monofilament
- Coating: Uncoated
Available in both dyed (D&C Green No. 6) and undyed (clear) options, Maxon™ Suture is free from phthalates, PVC, bisphenol, latex, and other common additives, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of surgical needs.
Indications
Maxon™ Suture is indicated for:
- General soft tissue approximation and ligation
- Pediatric cardiovascular tissue
- Peripheral vascular tissue
It is not recommended for use in adult cardiovascular tissue, ophthalmic surgery, microsurgery, or neural tissue.
Absorption and Strength
The suture's absorption occurs through hydrolysis, with minimal absorption until approximately 60 days post-implantation and complete absorption within 180 days. Its tensile strength retention is robust, maintaining around 80% at one week and gradually decreasing to 25% by six weeks.
Sizes and Configurations
Maxon™ Suture is available in a variety of sizes, from USP/EP sizes 1 to 7-0, and in multiple lengths. It offers a comprehensive range of needle types and configurations, including taper point, blunt taper point, and spatula, among others. Needle arcs include 1/2 circle, 3/8 circle, 5/8 circle, and straight, with options for regular and D-Tach™ attachments.
Performance
The suture exhibits excellent handling characteristics, with minimal memory and superior knot security. Its tissue reaction is minimal, characterized by a low acute inflammatory response and gradual encapsulation by fibrous tissue.
Sterilization and Shelf Life
Maxon™ Suture is sterilized using ethylene oxide and boasts a shelf life of five years. It is recommended to be stored at room temperature to maintain its integrity.
Regulatory Information
As a CE marked Class III medical device, Maxon™ Suture adheres to stringent regulatory standards, providing healthcare professionals with a reliable and effective tool for surgical applications.
