The Peristeen Plus Transanal Irrigation (TAI) System is an innovative medical device designed to assist individuals in managing bowel function effectively. Suitable for both children (from age 2 or 3, based on clinical guidance) and adults, it offers a practical solution for a wide range of users.

• Balloon Catheter: The system includes a single-use rectal balloon catheter that helps introduce lukewarm water into the rectum and colon, facilitating bowel emptying while seated on the toilet. The catheter is available in two sizes and features an inflatable balloon to ensure proper sealing and water retention.

• Control Unit: This unit is used to inflate the balloon and manage water flow. It can be conveniently fastened to the thigh using a strap, allowing for easy operation.

• Water Bag: Equipped with a screw top and a temperature indicator, the water bag should be filled with clean tap or bottled water at a temperature between 34–40°C. The correct temperature is indicated by a green marker.

• Tubes and Connectors: The system includes color-coded connectors for easy assembly, linking the water bag, control unit, and catheter.

Usage and Maintenance

The Peristeen Plus TAI System is designed for regular use, either daily or every other day, as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Initial assessment and training by a healthcare provider are essential to ensure proper use. The catheter is lubricated using water from the system, inserted into the rectum, and the balloon is inflated as instructed. After irrigation, the catheter is disposed of, and reusable components are cleaned and stored in the provided toiletry bag.

Maintenance involves replacing the water bag after 15 uses and the control unit and tubes after 90 uses. Straps should be replaced when their elasticity diminishes. All reusable parts should be cleaned with mild soapy water, rinsed thoroughly, and stored away from direct sunlight and sharp objects.

Safety Considerations

The system includes several important safety guidelines and contraindications. It should not be used by individuals with specific medical conditions such as anal stenosis, active colorectal cancer, or during pregnancy for first-time users. Users are advised not to over-inflate the balloon and to use only clean, lukewarm water without additives. Any severe pain, fever, or bleeding during use requires immediate medical attention.
