Description
Microlax Enemas offer a convenient and effective solution for those seeking temporary relief from constipation. Designed as a microenema, this rectal solution is suitable for a wide range of individuals, including adults, children, infants, and even pregnant or breastfeeding women, though medical advice is recommended in such cases.
Intended Use
This product is particularly beneficial for bowel evacuation prior to surgical or diagnostic procedures, such as X-rays, rectoscopies, and colon examinations. It is also useful for individuals with neurogenic bowel dysfunction, providing a reliable means of bowel management.
Mechanism of Action
Microlax Enemas work locally in the rectum, employing an osmotic and lubricant laxative action. The active ingredients include:
- Sodium Citrate: Draws water into the bowel, softening the stool.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate: Enhances wetting and penetration.
- Sorbitol and Glycerol: Further soften and lubricate the stool.
This combination stimulates a gentle and predictable bowel movement, typically within 5 to 30 minutes, without irritating the bowel lining.
Formulation
Each 5 mL tube contains:
- Sodium citrate dihydrate: 450 mg
- Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate: 45 mg
- Sorbitol: 3.125 g
Other ingredients include glycerol, sorbic acid, and purified water. The solution is colourless, opalescent, and viscous, packaged in a single-use, hygienic white plastic squeeze tube with a long, thin insertion nozzle.
Administration
To use, simply twist and remove the nozzle seal, lubricate the tip, insert the nozzle into the rectum, and squeeze out the entire contents. For children under three and infants, only partial insertion is recommended. The tube should remain squeezed while withdrawing the nozzle to ensure complete administration.
Precautions
Microlax Enemas are intended for occasional use only, as prolonged use may lead to dependence. Users should avoid the product if allergic to any ingredients, or if they have bowel ulcers, intestinal inflammation, or hypersensitivity. Adequate hydration is advised to prevent dehydration or electrolyte imbalance.
Storage
Store the product below 30°C and keep it out of reach of children. It is available in packs of 4, 12, or 50 tubes and is an unscheduled medicine, meaning it is available over the counter in Australia.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include slight rectal burning, irritation, anal discomfort, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea. Rarely, allergic reactions such as rash or hives may occur. If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a healthcare professional is recommended.
Additional Information
Microlax Enemas are not systemically absorbed, do not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, and have been a trusted solution since their development in Sweden in 1960. Known in some regions as Micolette Micro enema, this product continues to provide effective bowel relief with minimal systemic impact.
