Description
Cellacast® Soft by Lohmann & Rauscher is an innovative solution for effective immobilization in orthopedic care. This semi-rigid synthetic casting tape is expertly designed for use following fractures, surgeries, and various joint, bone, ligament, and tendon injuries. Its primary function is to provide functional immobilization, often used by trained professionals to create customized casts that may be combined with rigid splints for enhanced support.
Key Features
-
Material Composition: Comprised of approximately 60% knitted fiberglass and 40% polyurethane resin, Cellacast® Soft offers a unique blend of flexibility and strength. The resin includes polymeric MDI and aromatic isocyanates, with some versions containing natural rubber latex.
-
Activation and Setting: The tape is activated by water, setting into a lightweight, flexible cast that conforms seamlessly to body contours. Its diagonal and widthwise elasticity ensures excellent adaptability, while air permeability enhances comfort.
-
Radiolucency: The material is permeable to X-rays, allowing for easy medical imaging without cast removal.
-
Ease of Use: Available in various sizes and colors, each roll is individually sealed to prevent premature hardening. The tape can be cut, windowed, or bivalved both before and after drying, providing versatility in application.
Application Instructions
-
Preparation: Apply over undercast padding with gloves to avoid skin contact with the uncured resin. The tape should be dipped in water at 20–24°C (68–75°F) and applied in overlapping circular turns.
-
Moulding and Setting: Moulding time is approximately 2.5–3 minutes, with a setting time of 4–5 minutes. The cast becomes fully weight-bearing within 20–30 minutes.
-
Combination Use: Can be used alongside Cellacast® Xtra for additional stability where needed, suitable for both adults and children.
Safety Precautions
-
Handling: Use in a well-ventilated area to minimize exposure to isocyanates. Uncured material may irritate skin, eyes, and respiratory systems, and could cause allergic reactions.
-
Removal: Not recommended for bathing. Removal should be performed with standard cast scissors or an oscillating saw, with dust extraction or face masks advised.
Storage and Disposal
-
Storage: Keep in a dry place below 24°C (75°F) and protect from moisture. The product has a shelf life of two years if unopened.
-
Disposal: Ensure the resin is fully set before disposal. It can be discarded with household waste, incinerated, or sent to landfill following local guidelines, with low biodegradation leaving glass residue after burning.
Cellacast® Soft stands out as a reliable and adaptable casting solution, offering medical professionals the tools needed for effective patient care in a wide range of orthopedic scenarios.
