Description
AQUACEL® EXTRA™ Dressing and AQUACEL® Ag+ EXTRA™ Dressing, developed by Convatec, are advanced solutions for effective wound management. These dressings are designed to address both acute and chronic wounds, providing a versatile option for healthcare professionals.
Innovative Hydrofiber® Technology
At the core of these dressings is Hydrofiber® Technology, which consists of two layers of sodium carboxymethylcellulose. This unique composition allows the dressing to transform into a cohesive gel upon contact with wound exudate. This transformation enables the dressing to conform closely to the wound bed, maintaining an optimal moist environment that is crucial for healing. It also effectively locks in exudate, bacteria, and biofilm, reducing the risk of infection.
Enhanced Absorbency and Strength
AQUACEL® EXTRA™ is noted for its enhanced absorbency and strength, being 39% more absorbent and nine times stronger than standard AQUACEL® Dressings. This makes it particularly suitable for wounds with moderate to high exudate levels. The dressing is non-adhesive, requiring a secondary dressing, and is latex-free, making it suitable for a wide range of patients.
Antimicrobial Properties with Ag+ Technology
The AQUACEL® Ag+ EXTRA™ variant incorporates Ag+ Technology, featuring ionic silver, EDTA, and benzethonium chloride. This combination provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial action, disrupting biofilm and offering a barrier against bacterial penetration. It is particularly effective against infection-causing bacteria such as MRSA and VRE, making it ideal for wounds at risk of infection or with existing biofilm.
Versatile Applications
These dressings are indicated for a variety of wound types, including:
- Leg ulcers
- Diabetic ulcers
- Pressure ulcers
- Surgical wounds
- Traumatic wounds
- Partial-thickness burns
They are available in various sizes and formats, including sheets and ribbon dressings, to accommodate different wound dimensions and types.
Application Guidelines
For effective use, the wound should be cleansed before application, and the dressing should overlap the surrounding skin by at least 1 cm. In cavity wounds, the ribbon format should fill up to 80% of the space, allowing for expansion. The dressing can remain in place for up to seven days, depending on the level of exudate and clinical needs.
Award-Winning Innovation
Notably, AQUACEL® Ag+ EXTRA™ received the WUWHS Most Innovative Dressing Award in 2016, highlighting its significant contribution to wound care innovation.
Storage Instructions
Store these dressings in a cool, dry place at temperatures between 10°C and 25°C to maintain their integrity and effectiveness.
